SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative Specification) is a standard developed by the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA) that is intended to facilitate the management of storage devices from multiple vendors in storage area networks (SANs). An SMI-S provider is a software component produced by or for a particular storage product or family of products.
Manage and Add new devices
SMI-S defines common attributes for each component in a SAN. The specification is platform-independent and extensible. This makes it possible to add new devices to a SAN with a minimum of difficulty.
SMI-S can allow SAN managers to oversee all aspects of a network from a single point.

How Vital Labs can help?
Vital Labs can help in requirement analysis, feasibility study, design, implement, testing and vmware certification.
How it works?
It implements an HTTP server, it can parse XML requests, and it knows how to control those specific devices which usually have their own unique management interfaces.
The provider can be embedded in the firmware or operating system of the device itself.
It can exist as a standalone application running on a general purpose computer operating system. This model is called a “Proxy” provider.
